What it takes to get in
Electrical Engineer roles typically require a bachelor's degree, while Electrician roles require a high school diploma. Adding up the whole path to a first real job, including any apprenticeship, residency, or exam, comes to about 4 years for Electrical Engineer and 4.5 for Electrician.
Only one of the two is gated by licensing: Electrician requires State journeyman/master electrician license after apprenticeship, while Electrical Engineer does not. That cuts both ways — a license is a real barrier when you are trying to enter, and a real moat once you hold one, because it limits how quickly the labor supply can grow.
Pay range, not just the median

The physical difference is large enough to affect how long you can do the work: Electrician work is moderately physical, Electrical Engineer work largely sedentary. Physically demanding trades often pay well in your twenties and thirties and then force a move into supervision, inspection, estimating, or training — worth planning for rather than discovering at fifty.
Location flexibility is not symmetric here. Electrical Engineer work is typically hybrid, while Electrician work has to be done on site. That changes which metros you can earn a high salary from, and therefore what a given salary is actually worth after housing.
Moving between the two
Crossing between Engineering and Trades means rebuilding credentials and network from close to zero — the day-to-day skills do not carry, and neither does the résumé. Electronics and computer engineers overlap heavily and move between roles easily; power-systems specialists need additional training to shift into semiconductor or RF design. Military electricians and low-voltage/cable techs transfer in easily via credit toward apprenticeship hours; unrelated trades must start the apprenticeship from zero.
If you are entering rather than switching: Electrical Engineer — Earn an ABET-accredited bachelor's in electrical engineering, complete internships/co-ops, then enter industry — PE licensure only needed for public utility or consulting work. Electrician — Complete a 4-5 year IBEW or non-union apprenticeship combining paid on-the-job training with classroom instruction, then pass the state journeyman licensing exam.
